Things You Should Know Before You Apply
program eligibility
In general the Environmental Support Center's programs helps with direct expenses related to consulting, training, facilitation and other outside assistance for social and environmental justice organizations.
We define our priority constituency as environmental justice organizations, environmental networks and coalitions composed of environmental justice and/or activist groups.
Our programs typically cover items such as trainer or consultant fees, the costs of travel, meals and lodging to attend a skills-building workshop, or expenses such as room rental, postage, and printing for a board retreat.
We cannot reimburse the cost of a group's staff, overhead or ongoing operations.
To be eligible for the Environmental Support Center's programs, your organization must be a local, state or regional nonprofit organization with a portion of its resources devoted to environmental issues.
We can only assist organizations within the United States and its territories, but under certain circumstances may consider assisting groups based in either Mexico or Canada, provided that the issues on which the organization works have impacts on the U.S. side of the border.
We do not support individuals, government entities (including tribal governments), national or international organizations or their local chapters, for-profit businesses, or short-term, ad hoc organizations.
Like any nonprofit, the Environmental Support Center has to work within a specific scope, based on our strategic priorities and our financial capabilities. We receive three times as many applicants as we have resources to destribute. When deciding between applications, we also note whether or not:
- The group represents our priority constituency
- Has limited resources (budgets under $500,000)
- Is in a geographic area where we have dedicated or restricted funding.
From time to time, we may offer special programs will allow us to help groups that do not meet our priority constituency or criteria. When grants like these are awarded, we will post them on our website. We update our website whenever there is a significant change in our priorities or available funding.
